Technology Description:

And Battery Aero and its collaborators are developing battery cells, stacks, and systems using fluorinated electrodes to usher in a new type of battery chemistry for aviation applications. The team will focus on enhancing energy density of the cell design through electrode materials optimization and electrolyte formulation. The proposed approach would also innovate battery pack design to reduce energy density penalty due to packaging.

Market Impact Potential:

And Battery Aero’s technology could catalyze the broad electrification of the aviation sector by developing exceptionally high-energy density storage solutions. Converting primary fluorinated cathodes to be rechargeable could offer the most direct pathway to achieving the performance requirements for electric aviation. The onboard energy source could address close to 80% of all departures and lower jet fuel consumption, eliminating over 30% of emissions from aviation.
